New CONTENTdm Multi-Site Server provides powerful digital collection sharing capabilities
The new CONTENTdm Multi-Site Server allows users to query multiple CONTENTdm Servers from a single search interface. Building on CONTENTdm's cross collection search capabilities, users can now search collections located on servers in diverse geographical locations. Collections are queried from a single user interface and results are displayed in the familiar CONTENTdm viewers. Through these viewers users have access to standard CONTENTdm tools such as advanced search options and My Favorites, which allows users to save selected items for later use.
The Multi-Site Server, available in February, is a valuable solution for organizations with sub-locations maintaining their own digital collections. Collections developed and maintained at various locations can be shared and accessed via a common search tool. Researchers, teachers, and other users will have more efficient access to a broader range of materials and can review items through a consistent interface.
The Multi-Site Server is sold separately from CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software. It works by gathering the collection indexes, or metadata, from multiple CONTENTdm Servers and compiling them into a single index. When a search is conducted with the Multi-Site Server search client, item information is rapidly identified and displayed in the search results. Actual items are retrieved from and stored on the remote servers. System Administrators can designate which collections can be searched with the Multi-Site Server and customers can customize the Web interface for cross-server searching.
The Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) group uses the Multi-Site Server to search across 52 CONTENTdm collections located on servers at the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, and Southern Utah University. The combined collections consist of more than 79,000 stored items accessed from MWDL's single search interface. The Multi-Site Server will enable collaborative efforts, such as the MWDL, among CONTENTdm customers, opening their collections to broader user constituencies. These constituents will still experience the fast and reliable CONTENTdm search process no matter which collection they are accessing.
The CONTENTdm Multi-Site Server offers a level of consistency that assists both developers and users with efficient and powerful collection development, management, and access.
