Memorial University Chooses CONTENTdm to Preserve Collections

CHAMBLY, Québec—Memorial University of Newfoundland has purchased CONTENTdm from OCLC Canada in support of a new Digital Archives Initiative (DAI), managed jointly by the Faculty of Arts and the Libraries on behalf of the University.

The DAI will contribute toward the preservation of Newfoundland culture through the digitization of a variety of multi-media collections (audio, video, image and print) currently housed in the Centre for Newfoundland Studies, Maritime History and Folklore and Language Archives.

"We are thrilled that Memorial University has decided to implement CONTENTdm for their project. The library group at Memorial is well known for its technological expertise in Canada, and for them to choose to work with CONTENTdm is quite flattering," said Daniel Boivin, Director, OCLC Canada.

"We selected CONTENTdm because of the software's ability to satisfy the requirements of the DAI, including support for all media types, compliance with metadata standards, scalability, ease of use, user interface design, access control, copyright mechanisms and search and retrieval interoperability," said Slavko Manojlovich, Assistant to the University Librarian for Systems and Planning, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Access to the collections will be available through the CONTENTdm web interface, Z39.50 search and retrieval and via search engines using the Open Archives Initiative Metadata Harvesting Protocol.
