Wildlife Photo Safari Collection developed by Colorado State University
The CONTENTdm-based Wildlife Photo Safari is the home of a virtual collection of animal images and information about them. This online collection is from slides donated to Colorado State University Libraries by Warren and Genevieve (Genny) Garst. These slides were photographed over a period of 25 years as the Garsts traveled to Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, and the Americas while filming for Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom television series. More than 700 animal species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, insects and aquatic wildlife are represented within this slide collection.
The Garsts, residents of Fort Collins, CO donated the slides in September 1999. Warren served as chief photographer for Wild Kingdom for 25 years. The wildlife pictured in the slides come from countries on several continents.
In collaboration with CSU's Department of Fishery and Wildlife Biology, and the Discovery Center Science Museum, the Libraries are digitizing the slides and have developed an interactive Web site geared towards wildlife researchers and the K-12 community. The slides are culturally and historically significant to Colorado and the world, as evidenced by the impact these images had as a catalyst for global environmental conscience and conservation efforts. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, on the air from 1962-1988, was one of the few programs of its time to feature wildlife, and brought moving, living images of wildlife to our living rooms every Sunday night. This slide collection spans the 25 years that the Garsts were with Wild Kingdom. Extinction rates and endangered species levels have reduced the possibility of recapturing visual images of many of the animals pictured the slides.
