Importing Full Resolution Images

Digitized full resolution images can be added to your projects in batches or, if you are adding only a few, individually.

If your images are not yet digitized, they can be individually scanned into your project using a TWAIN-compliant scanning device.

Importing a Batch of Files

Use the Batch Add wizard to add multiple images at one time. The batch of full resolution images you are importing must reside in a single directory. If you have created custom display images, move those into another directory.

Tip: Because full resolution files are very large, they take longer to import. To identify an acceptable import processing time, begin by limiting the number of full resolution items you import at any one time to 100 or so items and adjust the number up or down from there.

To import a batch of full resolution files:

  1. Click batch add button Batch Add.

  2. Select Import files from a directory. Click Next.

    batch add 1

  3. Click Browse to locate the directory that contains your images. Double-click on the directory name (files within the directory must be displayed in the right pane of the browse dialog box). Click OK.

  4. Select Yes to indicate the files are full-resolution files.

  5. Indicate your Display Image Handling preference:

    • Select Auto generate display copies to use display images generated by CONTENTdm. To optimize the display images click Advanced. Learn more about optimizing images. (JPEG2000 Acquisition Station users can access JPEG2000 settings by clicking Advanced.)

    • Select Use preprocessed display images to use images you have previously color corrected, cropped, or resized as your display images. Custom images must be stored in a separate directory. Browse to your display image directory so that the files may be paired with the full resolution images. Each display copy file name must have the same root as the corresponding full resolution file (tree21.jpg and tree21.tif, for example).

  6. Click Next. The Finish dialog opens.

  7. Click Advanced to add metadata using the Template Creator. Click Finish when you are done. The display images and any metadata will be imported into your project, copies of the full resolution images are sent to your designated staging area.

  8. Finish adding full resolution images

Importing a Single Image

Importing a single image is a handy way to add one or two items to a project or test settings before importing a large batch of images.

To import a single image:

  1. From the import file Full Resolution menu, select Import File.

  2. Browse to and select the image. Click Open. The image and the Media Editor open.

  3. Enter metadata in the Media Editor fields and click Save. A title is required before the image can be saved to your project. CONTENTdm automatically generates a display copy of the full resolution image. To use your own custom display copy, see Using Custom Display Images for more information.

Importing Items from a Scanner or other TWAIN Device

Scanners or other digital devices used in conjunction with the Acquisition Station must be TWAIN compliant. If your device does not support TWAIN, use the software that came with your device to digitize images and then import items into your Acquisition Station projects using single image or batch modes.

To import a full resolution item using a scanner:

  1. From the import file Full Resolution menu, click Import Twain.

  2. Your TWAIN device interface will open. Scan your image.

  3. Specify the output type and image size.

  4. Tip: Before scanning the image, view the settings recommended for the collection by your Collection Administrator. From the Full Resolution menu, select Options. Click the Collection Properties tab.

  5. Send the scan to the Acquisition Station.

  6. The display image and Media Editor open. The full-resolution file is copied to the staging area, and CONTENTdm generates a thumbnail and display image automatically.

  7. Enter metadata and click Save. A title is required before the image can be saved to your project. The item remains in the project until it is uploaded to the pending queue for Collection Administration approval.
