Using the Template Creator

Use the Template Creator to:

  • automatically add descriptive metadata (such as creator, source, date) and administrative metadata (such as file size, height, width) that you want to appear in specified fields for all items as they are imported into a project
  • import text transcripts into fields within the collection as you import items into a project
  1. Establish your Template Creator settings before adding items to a project. Thereafter, the metadata fields of each item added to the project will carry the information you specified.

Note: Template Creator settings can be applied when you import tab–delimited text with your files. Template Creator values are introduced after the tab–delimited import is complete. In fields where tab–delimited text exists, CONTENTdm inserts a semicolon and a space then appends Template Creator metadata.

  2. Select Template Creator from the Tools menu or click Advanced during the Batch Add process.

  3. Type common metadata text into the Template Creator text boxes or choose from eight properties in the Template Creator Default Properties column: Color Space, Directory Import, File Name, File Size, Height, Media Type, Text, and Width. Click a field in the Default Properties column and select an option from the list that appears.

Select Text and type the default value in the next column. The text you type here will appear in the specified field of the metadata for all items you import into the current project.

If you select File Size, the size (in kilobytes) of each item you import into your collection will automatically be generated.

Selecting Media Type will yield the file type extension, such as JPEG or GIF.

Selecting File Name will import the original name of the file to a field other than (or in addition to) the Title field.

Selecting Directory Import allows you to batch import text files into metadata fields. This is especially useful for batch importing OCR text files. When you choose Directory Import you will be prompted to browse to the directory containing your text files. Text files with the same root file names will be paired with appropriate images. For example, the root file name of tree2.jpg is tree2, so CONTENTdm will seek out a text file with the root name of tree2. When you add items to your project the text from the directory you selected will be displayed in the specified directory import fields.

Selecting Height will yield the pixel height of imported JPEG or TIFF files.

Selecting Width will yield the pixel width of the imported JPEG or TIFF files.

Select Color Space to extract the color information from JPEG or TIFF files that you import. Examples of color space are RGB, grayscale, and CMYK

The defaults you specify in the Template Creator remain in effect for future imports into the Project Spreadsheet. They can be changed at any time. A new template must be created for each project.
